Terms of Use

- The app and this website
The short version. Train of Thought is a focus timer. Its journeys are simulations: they follow real railway lines from OpenStreetMap on real maps, with times estimated from the lines’ speeds, but they are not timetables, travel information or directions. Please don’t plan real trips with them.
These terms
These terms apply when you use the Train of Thought app and this website. The app is licensed to you, not sold, under Apple’s Licensed Application End User License Agreement (the Standard EULA). These terms sit alongside it. By using the app, you accept both.
What’s free
Planning, boarding, riding, arriving and keeping your logbook are free, with no time limit and no account.
Train of Thought Pro
Pro adds the extras: the driver’s cab and the window seat, the whole fleet of trains, live weather, every soundscape, your own purposes, extra map palettes, every insight, and your ride on the Lock Screen, in the Dynamic Island and in StandBy.
You can have Pro as a monthly or yearly subscription, or pay once for Lifetime. You can also buy a single train on its own. The App Store shows the price in your currency before you buy.
Subscriptions
- Payment is charged to your Apple Account when you confirm the purchase.
- A subscription renews automatically unless you turn auto-renew off at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. The renewal is charged within the 24 hours before the period ends.
- You can manage or cancel a subscription in your device’s Settings, under your name and then Subscriptions, or from the app’s Settings. When you cancel, Pro stays on until the end of the period you’ve paid for.
- When a free trial is offered and you’re eligible, you pay nothing until it ends. Cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends if you don’t want to be charged. If you buy a subscription during a trial, the rest of the trial ends.
One-time purchases
Lifetime and single trains are paid once. Use Restore purchases in the app to bring them back on another iPhone or iPad that uses the same Apple Account.
Refunds
Apple handles refunds under its own policies. You can ask for one at reportaproblem.apple.com.
Your logbook
Your journeys, notes and pass are yours. They are stored on your device and, when sync is on, in your own iCloud. You can export or erase them at any time from Settings. The Privacy Policy explains the details.
Using the app fairly
Use the app for your own personal, non-commercial purposes, as the Standard EULA describes. The app relies on map and routing services that others run for everyone; please don’t use it to harvest their data or to put unusual load on them.
Maps, data and sound
Maps by Mapbox. Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database License. Rail routes by OpenRailRouting, station search by Photon from Komoot, and railway data through the Overpass API. The soundscapes are mixed from field recordings shared on Freesound under CC0 and CC BY licences, and the recordists are credited in the app, in Settings under Acknowledgements.
These services are run by third parties. If one of them changes or goes offline, the parts of the app that depend on it may stop working until it returns.
Accuracy and liability
Train of Thought is provided as it is. Journeys, distances, speeds and times are approximations that make a focus timer feel like a train ride; they are not travel information. To the extent the law allows, the developer is not liable for indirect or consequential losses arising from use of the app. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under consumer law that cannot be limited by contract.
Changes
These terms may change as the app does. The current version is always on this page, with its date. If you keep using the app after a change, the new terms apply.
